You’re overwhelmed, stuck and feeling extremely alone in trying to figure out your next steps. You might be wondering whether you're looking for therapy or coaching in order to help you get unstuck. And this might feel confusing-- perhaps even piling on more feelings of overwhelm.
So what exactly is the difference between Therapy and Coaching?
While both generally have a unified goal of promoting personal growth and development, each type of service has a different FOCUS they support in terms of your experience and participation as a client. They each offer separate and distinct benefits, depending on what it is you're wanting to get unstuck from.
THERAPY is an introspective process of shifting the focus inward, towards yourself, in order to explore deeply embedded patterns, narratives and coping strategies that you picked up at some point along your journey as a means of survival, but perhaps now pose a barrier to creating and maintaining healthy relationships (to yourself and/or others), or no longer serve any helpful purpose. Therapy hopes to encourage you to cultivate your inner voice of compassion, understanding and acceptance in order to build and maintain meaningful relationships to yourself and your surrounding world, both by strengthening what is working well for you and developing new patterns, narratives and coping strategies to support this process.
Therapy with me includes addressing challenges labeled as:
COACHING is a short-term model with a focus on professional and/or personal goal development and accountability towards achieving those goals. Coaching DOES NOT address mental health conditions or diagnoses in accordance with the medical model, and is best suited for those who have already done the introspective work of therapy in order to prepare a platform for the high functioning, self-motivated work of Coaching. Coaching can help take "the good stuff" from what informs high performance and over-achievement and teach you how to use those qualities effectively to work for, and not against, personal and professional growth-- turning your liabilities into assets.
Coaching with me includes, and is not limited to:
My approach to the work, whether it be through Therapy or Coaching, is rooted in strengths-based and solution-oriented ideas about how change happens. When we work together, our primary focus will center on helping you answer questions about yourself that include:
What about my life is working?
How have I made things happen for myself in the past, despite what I am struggling against right now?
How can I connect with what I am already doing well in my life in order to stand up to the problem I am facing right now?
Being Strengths-Focused serves as the philosophical underpinning in my work as a Therapist and Coach. I believe that when we focus on what is working well right now, and what has worked well in the past, we can better chart our course of action for where you would like to go from here and how you will know the change that you're hoping for is working.
Whether it's through Therapy or Coaching, I want you to know that getting unstuck IS possible.
Your life is ready and waiting for you. I can help you get there.
